Measure the area to determine the total square footage.
Choose a pattern (e.g., herringbone, basket weave, or running bond).
Select the type of paving stone based on color, texture, and durability.
Mark out the layout using stakes and string lines.
Excavate the area to a depth of about 15–25 cm (6–10 inches) depending on the type of soil and expected load.
Make sure the base slopes slightly (about 1–2%) away from buildings to allow for proper drainage.
Start at one corner or a straight edge and lay the pavers in the chosen pattern.
Place them gently but firmly onto the sand, leaving a small gap (about 3 mm or 1/8 inch) between each stone.
Use a rubber mallet to tap the pavers into place.
Sweep fine sand (preferably polymeric sand) into the joints between the pavers.
Use a plate compactor to compact the entire surface. This helps the sand settle into the joints and the pavers to lock in place.
Sweep more sand into the joints as needed.
Remove any excess sand and clean the surface.
Apply a sealant if desired, to enhance color and protect the surface from stains or weathering.
